It is May – the month where everything turns green and flowers bloom. What does it take to make the flowers grow? Warm sunshine and plenty of April rain. But without nourishment, the flowers will not thrive – they will fade away.
Much like flowers, we too need to grow or we will fade away. Fellowship and knowledge feed our mind and soul, keeping us vibrant throughout our lives. When was the last time you nourished yourself in this way?

IAAP offers so many options for both networking and relevant education, making it easy and fun for you to grow to be your strongest and most vibrant self. Like a beautiful flower, you will find yourself blossoming in ways you never imagined possible.

How do I know? You may have heard me say many times how I feel blessed to have participated in the first class of IAAP Leadership Academy. Through that experience I have found myself strong enough to advocate for not only myself but also the other admins in my company and push for their education. Seeing my growth, our president began realizing the value of the growth of everyone on the team – not only technical staff, as had previously been the model. It is an uphill battle in nearly every technical firm, but the status quo can be changed when principals can see the outcomes of a fully trained team on all levels of an organization.

I strongly encourage you to consider applying for the IAAP Academy of Leadership to help your mental garden thrive. There are three levels to fit your needs, whether you manage others, or, like most of us, #leadup from where you sit. I, for one, have applied and was accepted to attend Frontline Leadership in September. My supervisor didn’t even think twice when I asked if I could attend, even though he had already nominated me for an internal leadership cohort. Why? In his reference letter, he said, “Her performance and growth are a testament to the IAAP Leadership Academy”. I encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and apply to the level most applicable to you.

Thinking you’d like to grow, but not sure you’re ready for the leadership conversation yet? IAAP offers so many options for you to expand your horizons and get inspired by others who have done the same. You read about many opportunities in Ann’s blog post last month so I won’t list them all again. I will say that I hope to meet you during our flagship event, Summit, to be held in July at the Gaylord National Harbor in Maryland. From my perspective, Summit is just the shot of Miracle-Gro your mental garden needs to thrive!

Step outside your comfort zone and nourish your most brilliant self. You will be amazed at what you can do when you start to bloom. Maybe you’ll even decide to help lead IAAP to be the best it can be… #WeLeadUp #WeLeadTogether

Certification in Training

• Developed as discussion of the College and University Working Group
• Purpose:  To provide a recommendation to the board of a framework for a new entry-level certification (naming to be determined at a later date)

Governance and Leadership Committee (GLC)

• Reviewed the Regional Director nomination and election process
• Review Regional Director candidate applications and determine eligibility
• Reviewed the IAAP Board nominations and elections process

New Initiatives
 Virtual Town Halls – You spoke, we listened!   Beginning at our spring board meeting, the board will be hosting virtual town halls at least twice a year!  Watch your inbox for details!

World Administrators Summit
IAAP is proud to rejoin the delegate body of the World Administrators Summit (WAS).  The WAS is important to the viability of our profession and the associations that advocate and support us.

April is the month when we traditionally celebrate Administrative Professionals Week in the U.S. During the week of April 22-26, Facebook and Instagram will no doubt be overflowing with photos of lovely floral arrangements and other tangible forms of recognition from employers. While it’s great your employer acknowledges the hard work you do all year long, this year, I challenge you to consider celebrating in a different way.

This year, I encourage you to approach your employer ahead of Administrative Professionals Week and ask him or her to invest in your professional development instead of purchasing the traditional gifts to recognize this annual holiday. Request the funds to attend a conference, seminar, online course, or to purchase the CAP Study Guide and SmartBook, if you aren’t already CAP certified.

If you work for an employer who doesn’t invest in or support your professional development, I urge you to invest in yourself. You’re worth it! IAAP offers education for a variety of budget points and through a variety of channels including live and on-demand webinars, and in-person and virtual meetings at the Branch and Regional levels. IAAP also offers large conferences such as CAPstone in March, Summit in July, CAP Bootcamp in August, and the new Academy for Leadership Development with three different leadership tracks to explore. Don’t forget to check out the many options available through learn@iaap, including deep dive courses, bundled webinars, the Crisp 50-Minute series of books, and even several free resources.

This year, I’ve asked the executive I support to donate to the Admins First campaign on my behalf instead of purchasing a gift. I’m blessed and grateful to have an employer who supports my professional development, but I’m also keenly aware that many administrative professionals aren’t as lucky. This is my way of paying it forward to help the IAAP Foundation continue investing in the success of office and administrative professionals by supporting innovative research, educational and professional development opportunities, and affordable housing initiatives.

However you celebrate this year, let me be among the first to wish you a Happy Administrative Professionals Week!

“All we Need is Love”… I think that is how the song title goes?  If all we need is LOVE, what a wonderful world this would be.

So, why do I love being a member of IAAP? I have grown professionally and personally over the years through my membership with IAAP.  I have grown to love connecting with other administrative professionals from around the world.  I love being able to learn the latest technology to be able to stay up to date with my skills.  I love the challenges that the various IAAP leadership opportunities has provided me.  I love being more confident in my career.

So, what can IAAP provide for you?
